Civilization has risen and fallen in Phaela for 20,000 years. The large continent has seen many rulers, and much cultural diversity. About 1,000 years ago colonizers, called Movrani, came and conquered the entire continent, uniting the cultures under one language.

Around this time, strange meteorites began to fall to the planet. These stones are constructed of a rare metal. They have garnered an ominous reputation. The radiation in these stones causes various effects ranging from disease to mutation to invulnerabitity.

About 500 years ago the Movrani's numbers dwindled. Their presence became nonexistent, leaving most civilization fractured and disrupted. No one knows why the Movrani left. Some cultures have rebuilt their civilization, some failed and have fallen completely, others remain in isolation.

The Glass City is a small city deep in the desert. It is mostly made of small, adobe buildings, but prominent buildings are of an iridescent desert glass. Here, the meteors are called Seething Stones. One has not fallen in hundreds of years.

It is a mysterious place with mysterious people who believe in many types of spirits. They often believe that spirits are behind many natural forces such as storms, disease, etc. The Glass City has a thriving marketplace, but is isolated from other cities. Most of the goods are crafted from the readily available materials. In the center of the city is a spring where most people bathe, wash things, and retrieve drinking water.

Most of the citizens are illiterate, so history is transmitted orally. There are a few temples scattered around the city, but the Dynast of the Glass City does not strictly enforce worship. Two religions dominate the city. The first is a very old religion with a pantheon of 12 natural forces or archetypes (not gods). The second is a religion centering around a trinity of Gods. These two religions are not mutually exclusive and can be practiced in concert.

The Glass City has been in isolation for so long that it lost all of its allies outside of the desert. Only the highest scholars know of the cities still in existence.

Yet without having any diplomatic relations, messengers were sent to all known cities within a two week's journey to inform them of a fallen meteor. The message is brief and somewhat mysterious, unclear of whether it's an invitation. It reads as follows:

The Glass City writes this message to inform of a seething stone fallen in the Painted Dunes. It's being held in the Grace of the Desert's sanctum.

The City of Altdorf

An old and prosperous city, Altdorf is the capital of the powerful Kingdom of Lycia. With it's large and thick stone walls the city if well protected by a large professional army and the mighty Paladins that serve the knightly order known simply as the Order of the Eagle.

The city itself a major economic hub being on the coast and it trades with various other cities throughout the continent. The Kingdom of Lycia itself is known for it's exports in minerals, food, and textiles, and it imports people as many flock to Lycia looking for a new life.

The population of Altdorf is a microcosm of the population of Lycia itself. It is diverse in both ethnicity and in terms or literacy with lowborn peasants being illiterate and with the middle class up to the nobility being more and more literate and studied in various arts and skills.

Order of the Eagle

The Order of the Eagle, sometimes simply called The Order is an ancient and well respected religious order most prominent in the Kingdom of Lycia. The Order believes that the meteors that fell to the world were gifts from the Gods that must be harnessed by man for the betterment of mankind. The Order works tirelessly to protect the fallen meteors. The Order has a presence in many cities keeping a watchful eye on the stones to make sure they are not used for evil purposes. However many see the Order as a corrupt and power hungry organization out to simply grab more power for themselves.

The Order trains warriors known as Paladins that harness the power of the stone that fell near Altdorf and has since been moved into the great temple. Paladins are highly trained warriors able to use any manner of weapon effectively but their most powerful tool is the Holy Stone itself. Paladins are trained to draw upon it's immense power allowing them to unleash powerful attacks, heal themselves and others to a degree, and many other abilities.

Paladins not only protect the city of Altdorf and the Kingdom of Lycia but are sent out into the world to protect others as well. It is not entirely uncommon to see a small party of Paladins far away from Lycia on a patrol mission out to smite evil and wrongdoers. Paladins generally obey the law of the land but not at the expense of their Holy Law sent down from The Order.
