The dark alleyways of this gloom filled city at night stand hoarded with the unattended crime and gross misconduct. Rape, Murder, Theft, all overlooked in a place run by gangs, drug dealers, the essence of crime itself.

These Streets Had Someone To Look To For Hope Years Ago

Lightning strikes as rain begins to pour over an abandoned museum. A young girl approaches the building when searching for shelter. Inside, she hears the flutter of wings and the squeaks of bats.

He's Gone Down As A Myth. Nothing More Than A Story Parents Tell Their Kids To Scare Them Straight. But I Know The Truth. I Know...He Was More

The girl backs away from the bats in the blur of a moment, tripping and falling, stumbling into a case and causing what lies in it to fall over. The glass crashes and shatters, alarming her. She first runs and hides before peaking her head out and approaching the broken case, finding on the ground what appears to be a cowl, one that resembles...a bat.

Now It's My Turn

In a pitch black room, an interrogation light flicks on before a nervous man who's beaten to a near pulp, blood trickling from his lower lip, his eye black, his upper lip busted, he'd been mercilessly punished. "Tell me who the man is that did this to you," says a voice in the dark.

"I-It wasn't...it was some kind of freak. Half a human," the thug says weakly through a busted vocal chord. "It came outta nowhere. All of them. All of my boys..."

"This mysterious 'creature' just walked up to your operation, kicked you around a bit, then beat the crap out of your boys. Tell me...what did it look like?"

The thug musters up the strength to hold up his head. "It didn't just walk up in the place...it dropped in...like from the sky. It...it looked like a...bat."

From the blinding darkness, leans in a man with a man with a black disfigured face resembling a skull. "Well, that's interesting," he says, leaning back. The thug looks up again to find the barrel of this black faced man's gun before him. Then comes the sound of thunder and the flash of lightning.

This Is My City...I'm Her Protector...

A young woman with Gothic make-up and purple dyed hair stands alone on a rooftop at night, a solid black gun in her hand. She smiles as she watches over the city.

She Is Vengeance

A man in red and black lands in the midst of a robbery in process, spinning around and kicking one of the crooks in the face before tossing two throwing discs, causing two more to drop the crate they're loading into a boat on the docks.

She Is The Knight

A black suited young woman climbs up the side of a building using a fire escape and leaps up from the second to last portion as it begins to fall over by hand of her targets gun. She emerges over the edge of the building's rooftop, her cloak flowing behind her like the eerie trail of a black phantom before flipping forward and landing on him, standing up over his unconscious body with a picture in hand of a familiar face. She then crushes the picture in her hand and tosses it over her shoulder, walking away. The picture unfolds in the air and sways gently to the rooftop floor, showing the picture of a blonde little girl playing with her mother and father.

I really liked your sort of short story, Twilight. I think it captured the feeling of the darkness and beginning somewhere and it explained Angelica's start as Bat-Girl really well, if that's what you meant to do.

Oh. Being that this is a "What If?", the big What If involved is "What If Black Mask WASN'T Angelica's Uncle?" An alternate timeline in which pretty much none of the Lorelei stuff happens.
