Issue Zero-A Brief History
Thundera, a peaceful planet inhabited by a race of people with feline characteristics. For centuries the different tribes fought for food and territory until one Thunderan decided to end the fighting. Uniting all that thought like him from across the tribes Leon and his followers struck like thunder earning the name Thundercats. In time he succeeded in uniting all tribes and became Lord of Thundera.
Leon was not just a powerful warrior but a wise man as well. He knew forcing his rule on the people would only bring more fighting amongst them. To make sure this never happened he chose members from each tribe to serve as nobles and be his advisors. The Thundercats became Thundera’s protectors and as a gift presented Leon with a sword forged from their world’s strongest metal and empowered it with ancient magic.
Leon ruled a hundred years overseeing great advancements in science, architecture, art and many other areas before passing his throne and sword to his son, Leon II. It was during the reign of Leon II that the sword given to Leon I became known as the Sword of Omens when it showed of an attack on Thundera by Mutants. Throughout his reign Leon II fought back the Mutants countless times before dieing in battle.
Claudarus took up his father’s sword and fight leading the Thunderans in forcing the Mutants to flee back to their homes. Unfortunately this was not good enough for the young lord; he took five hundred Thunderan soldiers and half of his Thundercats with him following the Mutants leaving Thundera in the hands of the nobles and his younger brother, Liono. Since Liono was too young to rule the nobles took up the role of leaders until the day Lord Claudarus returned.
The nobles ruled for five years, much longer than they had intended or expected. When the ship that had taken those they had given up for lost returned there was a mix of joy and disappointment amongst the nobles. Many had grown accustomed to their position of power and were not ready to give it and were secretly relieved to hear that Claudarus had died.
The Sword of Omens and title of Lord were now officially Liono’s to claim and Thundera was now his to rule and protect but the nobles that wanted to keep their power argued that he was still too young to lead pointing to the irrational decision his brother had made that resulted in his death and suggested that the nobles still be the one’s to make decisions. For a time Liono agreed to this until he was shown the way the common Thunderan lived and Liono swore to change this.
A civil war was started as a result of Liono attempting to claim his birthright and take power from the nobles. With the Thundercats and others loyal to the royal family at his side Liono eventually succeeded in taking back the throne of Thundera. He was true to his word and spent most of his reign restoring Thundera to what it was before the Mutant attacks.
Thundera entered what became known as the Thousand Year Peace that began during Liono’s reign. The Thunderan rulers during this period became known as the Forgotten Lords, not because they accomplished nothing but because their accomplishments were so minor. None of them won some great victory or oversaw some great advancement in the sciences or arts. The biggest accomplishment during this time was the building of monuments to Leon I and Liono. The peace ended when the Mutants returned during the reign of Claudus I and started an endless struggle between the two worlds.
